HP DDS2 Drive. Orange Light only and spits out tapes.

I have a HP DDS2 Drive, C1599A.
The orange light is the only one lit when you connect the power.

If you put in a tape (either DDS2 or cleaning) it takes up the tape to the heads, then rewinds it back inot the cartridge, then spits it out again.

Does anyone know what is wrong.

I called HP but they said it was out of warranty so it would cost me £150 callout, £120 per hour plus parts!

Any help greatly appreciated.

sounds like a duff drive, have you tried more than one DDS2 tape to confirm its not a media issue ? im assuming its a SCSI bus running so a long shot could be the scsi card/controller at fault, unlikely but worth a shot if you have a spare.

i've got a DDS2 drive for sale if your in the UK If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out

This happens even when the drive is not connected to the scsi bus.

Have tried various media.

Thanks for the advice.

If anyone knows which sensor/part is faulty it might be worth trying to fix/get the new parts.

As for a new drive, if I have to replace it, I think I will upgrade to DDS4.

Thanks again rob for your help.
