My dad has a HP 612c problem. The printer just stopped printing for no apparent reason. All cables are connected good. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 4 or 5 times according to HP's user guide. Sometimes when I try to uninstall it comes up with an "This Application has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error. He went and bought a new HP 610 printer to see if the printer had died....It does the same thing! Could the registry have corrupted entries? If so how do I locate the specific entries for the HP 612c? Or should I just reinstall Windows 98?
Thanks for any help,
Russ

Corrupted registry is a maybe, but I'd check some of the easier things first. There is information at for support issues on the registry if this other doesn't give you any satisfactioin

Sounds more like a printer connection or printer controller problem inside the computer. If the brand new one will not work either, it has to be the printer port controller unless someone made a change in CMOS changing the address, IRQ for the printer port.

Look in Device Manager under Ports, It should be LPT1, then double click on that to see which IRQ it is using. Most generally it will be 7. The address & IRQ is usually shown by going to the resource tab after double clicking on LPT1.

I guess it could be faulty RAM or a failing CPU, overheating (checked the fan on the cpu?), instructions to the applications and ram will get really messed up if that CPU is getting hot!

All, I can think of. Good Luck, I'm sure someone will have some more things for you to try if none of this works! ggebhart@clover.net
I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!
