HOWTO? : DB Maintenance Mode and Single-User Mode

I'm quite new to SQL and have been winging it since our new server was installed on getting it configured and optimized. I'm currently stuck on the maintenance and single-user modes.

Most of my maintenance tasks are failing because it's not in single user mode. How do I automatically drop it into single user, perform the tasks, and bring it back up again in the DB maintenance wizard? I never saw "switch to single user mode" in the options.

Am I just missing something or does it need to be scripted with SQL Agent?

Thanks!
