How Windows work.

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me in as much details as possible how Windows actually work? For example, what actually happens when I start my pc, when I run a program etc.

Books or Articles are also welcomed.

This is not the place for an answer to your question. I suggest that you do a web search for microprocessor principles or computer principles for starters. It sounds like you need them first. Then a search for programming principles. Perhaps others will give you the name of some books you might read. Ed Fair

Thanks for your reply, but that isn't what I am really looking for. What I am looking for is how does Windows actually work. I know how does the memory etc. works but perhaps in general terms something like this and this is loaded when windows start something along this line.

Perhaps you can roughly explain how it is like?

Are you talking about bootstrapping processes and file allocation tables etc etc.

If so I can recommend a book by Irv Englander

Architecture of Computer Hardware and Systems Software: An IT Approach (2nd Edition)

I used it for my MSc and found it quite interesting - fairly broad though, bound to have what you are after.

I know it has a section at the back where it compares Windows 9X, with Linux/Unix and MVS (i think?). Probably not worth buying just for that though.

I have to be honest - explaining in great detail how windows works does not really fit in with the idea of a 'tips' forum.

I think you'll find that anybody who could answer this question in a satisfactory manner has spent several years learning the answer, which in a way is the answer, as you can't just 'explain' it in half a page of text.

This is not a criticism - just a suggestion that your question is much to broad. I would suggest start with a basic book, then post requests for specific details when you need it.

A very basic place to start would be the Windows for Dummies book. Although the book does not get very in-depth, it goes about explaining a lot of the basics in a somewhat interesting and humorous manner. Any book store or library would have this book.
