how to use cvsm from NT4.0 server to access 2924 switch?

I'm a real newb when it comes to this network admin so would appreciate a bit of help. How can I check out how the ports are configured on my switch using a cisco cable? Do I simply plug it into the console port and then plug the other end into the server?
What do I need to configure if I'm going to use telnet or IE 5?
I have just heard that there is some kind of DOS exploit on cisco switches running IOS but am unsure as to whther this affects me--the cisco site says anything running IOS can be vulnerable but does this apply to my switch which is behind a firewall?

Another question--how do I find out what the IP of my switcvh is? My documentation says one thing but how doi I know if it's right without getting into the switch--which I need the IP to do???
