Hi,

I'm currently on the planning stage of upgrading our entire network (by batch) from NT4 servers and workstations to Win2000 and XP Pro. Any suggestions on what's the best path to take? Should I start on the servers or the workstations? I have around 30 servers and 150 workstations and plan to roll out the upgrade for the next 6 months.

Appreciate your answers

Well, first thing you have to think about is are you going to Windows 2000 Active Directory, or sticking with the NT4 domain model? This is a big question, and upgrading the domain is a big step, requiring a LOT of planning.

Upgrading Workstations isn't really that big an issue except with (locally installed) program compatabilities. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

Thanks Dhawthorn. Appreciate your input(s). Just got info that we will not be using the Active Directory of Windows 2k. So, should I start with the DC's or the other member servers.

Regards

Err, if you're NOT going to AD, then you will have to leave all your DCs as NT4. To upgrade a DC to Windows 2000, you have to upgrade the PDC first, which will effectively convert your domain to AD.

So to answer your question, you will upgrade your member servers, as you can't touch the DCs without changing your domain model. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K
