We have a Catalyst 4006 with the latest IOS. Everything has been running fine until this morning. Nothing has changed but on certain servers, it takes an excessively long time to copy large files to / from a workstation or other servers. I setup and ran Windows 2000 Network monitor and performance monitor and everything looks fine. The files do eventually copy but are extremely slow. On a few servers on the exact same switch / blade, the same files copy to / from workstations very quickly / normally. My guess is that there is something wrong with the Catalyst but how can I troubleshoot a problem like this?

I found the problem... the guy that was here before me set the speed and duplex manually on the Catalyst ports and to Auto on the server NIC's. Apparently, both have to be set the same way or you will experience performance issues. Changing this on the W2K server is easy but when I try to set the port on the catalyst to auto, it will not let me do it? it just returns the syntax?

From enable mode, I'm using >

set port duplex 2/13 auto
set port speed 2/13 auto

Is this not the correct syntax?

I would nail it at 100/full personally. But, to answer your question:

The syntax is correct. You got the order backwards.

set port speed x/y auto
set port duplex x/y auto

Hope that helps

If you are running IOS, the commands are "duplex auto" and "speed auto". The commands you are using are for the CatOS 4000.
