Hi

I asked a question related to this before and I got a great answer, thank you to pmonett for answering.....:)

I have another question in regards to disabling some programs on startup:
I have a couple of things showing up on my screen every startup but have no idea where they are coming from and what their names are.

For example I have one that was a software installed and it shows up in the bottom taskbar that this software will cause windows to become unstable, so it has been disabled.
But when I look for it in search, the search comes up empty.

Also I have a window showing up for norton antivirus showing me the contents of it's folder, and I don't want that screen popping up every time I boot up.

How do I find these programs?
I tried running msconfig, but I can't understand/relate a lot of the things running in there as they have strange names such as "dumprep 0-k" - LOL!!

If you are unsure what to remove then go to and download Hijack This. Shen downloaded open the software and click on the Config Button. Thjen click on the Misc Tools button, tick the "List Minor Sections" box and then click the Generate Start-up List button.

After a few seconds a text document will appear, copy the contents to this page and post the message. We can then take a look for you and make suggestions.

You can also take a look at for infor about the Hijack This software.

Do you have this software that Windows has disabled listed in Add or Remove Programs, so you can uninstall it?

You may have to uncheck boxes in Folder Options/ View so that Hidden files and System files are visible. You may also have to set your Search Preferences to look for Hidden and System files. After you get rid of whatever you are searching for it may be a good idea to return the Folder Options/ View settings back to hide those hidden and system files.

Windows XP Professional starts logon scripts, startup programs, and services referenced in these registry subkeys and folder locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

"Dumprep 0-k" is related to errors when programs crash and is a record of machine memory pertaining to the crash. These dumps are stored in the folder Minidump in the Windows folder. "Dumprep 0-k" may be unchecked in Msconfig as Windows will recheck it should it need it. There is no need for it to load at every Start Up. These are just files that you may send to Microsoft if you decide to after an error and that can be used for general debugging. The size of these files are controlled by your settings in System Properties/ Startup and Recovery.
