Hi all,

I want want to know how I can share a cable internet
connection ??? The setup is as follows:

My home computer has a nic, and my laptop has a nic,
which both go the my hub. The hub is directly connected
to the cable modem.

Now the problem is, that only my home computer can connect
to the internet while I also need my laptop to be able to
log on at the same time. How can I manage this ??? Is there
(preferably free) software for that ??? Or did I just
"screw up" in the setup of my hardware ???

Thank you for at least reading my post, [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

Everyone has a right to my opinion.

If you only have 2 computers, a hub is not necessary. This is not a recommended hookup. Use 2 ethernet cards in the host computer, and one in the laptop. I tried the hub thing and it didn't work right. Make sure you use a "crossover" cable to hook them together. A rj45 cable will not work for this. A rj45 will be needed for the connection between the modem and the host computer, however.

I have a few more tips. I tried the hub thing and had the same problem. The 3 ethernet cards setup works great on mine, so you will have to go to wal mart and get another ethernet card for $19. The 2 cards will go in your home computer, which will be the host. If it doesn't have windows xp or 2000, you may have to manually config the IP addresses. Mine has xp and does this automatically. I like sharing files, drives and printers besides sharing the internet connection. If you can't get a "crossover" cable for the peer to peer connection, it's easy to make one out of a rj45 cable. This is what I had to do and it works perfect. Go here to learn how:

Some cable internet providers use the mac address of the nic installed in the main pc to authenticate the connection, in this case you either need 2 nics in your main machine and ICS or to use an old PC and something like smoothwall ( (free)) as a hardware firewall and nameserver for your network.
This is a much safer solution. ***************************************
Party on, dudes!

the best way you can do it is by using a dsl/cable router. plugin each machine and the router will act like a firewall.
that way you don't have to have both machines on at the same time. the router goes in after the modem. program the router with you logon info and you will be connected all the time
