How to set up and configure a VPS for web hosting? 1

Hi,
As a longtime Linux C and Perl programmer with relatively limited experience in administrative tasks, I have recently begun leasing a Linux-based Virtuozzo VPS with a web hosting provider. This multiple Cpanel/WHM setup will be my first experience setting up and managing an eCommerce website on a Linux system. Even for someone who cut his teeth on assembly programming and burning Z-80 OS E-PROMS way back in the old 8-bit days, to say that this is all very daunting would be an understatement.

Am I in the right place in this forum for questions about "howtos?", "whatifs?," and "whatsitfors?"

Well, if someone has experience using cPanel and its features will certainly help you, although this forum is aimed at linux related problems/questions and not at any specific linux server management solution.

If your provider could give you access to your VPS through a console (via SSH for example), definitely in this forum you would find hundreds of people ready to help.

Anyway, try to post your questions here and probably someone will be able to help you.

Yes, I have access to the VPS via ssh. And I have experience using Emacs in a window on my home system that is actually running via ssh to a university computer lab, editing and running Perl and C in that way.

In fact, I anticipate that this is one way in which I will be interacting with the website design process, since I have web development tools that run in Windows, and will likely be creating pages offline and uploading them via ssh.

But there are likely to be a variety of OS and package questions, I anticipate. I'm not a complete newbie with regard to the Linux OS and configuring/installing things as root, but I am by no means a seasoned system administrator either.

Welcome to our forum torandson.

Just in case you have not yet found out, on windoz you can use pscp.exe, which is basically linux scp command with all its features, to upload files to a linux server using SSH encryption.

I find pscp the best way to transfer files; you can drop them exactly in the directory you want, instead using FTP will allow you to only see your home on the server.

It is part of the PuTTY suite of utilities and as PuTTY it is free and open source.

Yes, have used it often, actually.

I'm still more concerned here with the nuts and bolts of the Linux VPS, about which I don't yet have a specific question.

I was mainly curious to see if there were any regulars here with experience managing a Linix VPS.
