In the properties/settings section wherein one can adjust screen resolution, I can only choose between 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768.1024x768 renders everything correctly but too small for my eyesight to read so I use 800x600. With that setting however many windows are displayed slightly too larg for the screen and frequently you cannot scroll enough to see some of the command buttons at the bottom. Is there way to select a resolution between 800x600 and 1024x768 and if so how?

sounds like you have to adjust the width/height of your monitor using the alignment buttons on the front of your monitor.

Double click the top window bar (blue one) twice and it will adjust.

I'm not very knowledgeable about video stuff, so I'm not sure about this-but I think those options are controlled by your video card and monitor drivers.

You could hunt around in driver and system information and see if you have drivers for your specific hardware installed or just generic ones. If your system is using generic drivers that came with your version of windows, you could try getting specific monitor and video card info, going to the manufacturers web site, and see if you can find drivers for that hardware and your windows that you could install and then have more options in the video setup.
(My system shows a 1024-600 option too and I think that came from my video card driver.)

If that doesn't do it, then you are probably limited to resizing suggestions above unless you want to buy newer video hardware-and if you do choose to look at new hardware, ask a lot of questions before buying to be sure spending the money will accomplish what you want.

These settings are determined by what your monitor can run at and your video card can produce. If you get an .inf file for your monitor that will help determine what modes it can run. Most times windows only put the defaults in for a "Plug and Play" monitor, and then restricts your choices to the resolutions that this monitor setting can handle.

Most newer video cards can run a lot of different settings, but windows hides them according to what your monitor can handle.

Go to the web site of your monitor manufacturer and see if there is a driver file you can get and see if that helps.

Why not use the 1024x768 setting and adjust text/icon size to suit your own preference under display properties.

Have a look at the effects and appearance tabs.

Also follow some of the commenst from other users and adjust the monitor setting to fit the window to your screen, some more recent displays have a auto button that will set this for you,

brit54, the allowable screen resolutions is a function of your video drivers. If you're using a video card manufacterer's drivers, than try the chipset drivers instead. Sometimes that will work.

As people has posted, it seems your window size is too big for your screen and their suggestion has been to maximize your windows. Which is a decent solution, however it won't help you if you want to view multiple windows at once, which is common.

Change back to the 1024x768 screen resolution and resize your windows to a size that will fit within the 800x600 resolution and when you switch back to the actual 800x600 resolution, you could resize as you see fit.

However, there are ways to view larger fonts at higher resolutions, 2 in fact. ^_^

In the Display Properties under the Apperance Tab, there is a Schema drop down menu, scroll down to Windows Classic (Large) or Windows Standard (Large). Also try (Extra Large) if you want. Everything is recoverable by first saving your current Schema by pressing the Save As button and saving your Schema under a filename you make up on your own or if you've never changed your setting before, choosing the Windows Classic or Windows Standard Schema from the Schema drop down menu.

You could create your own Icon size and Font size and even icon spacing from choosing the items you want to change from the Items drop down menu here. Try it out, but remember to save your old Schema before changing anything, so you won't be trying to guess what blue is the Classic blue for the Windows background.

The other way is to go to the Display Properties in the Settings Tab, click the Advanced button. In the General Tab, there should be a Font Size drop down menu that should list Small Fonts as default. Change it to Large Fonts or create a custom size. Click Apply and than OK. You'll probably have to restart your computer.

Thank you all for your suggestions for my problem. All were invaluable.

Unfortunately my problem remains even after trying most if not all of the ideas. Permit me to elaborate:

Besides the original post remarks, attempting a variety of fixes does not resolve the visible appearance of the windows when in the higher resolution of 1024x768, or of the font sizes that appear in those small windows.

I have tried to adjust the various characteristics of the windows under the 'appearance' tab but do not seem able to increase the sizes of the little pop up windows or the fonts used therein. For example, just the right click for the drop down menu to access the 'properties' area from the desktop renders such a tiny window it's difficult to read.
Now this is with the revised settings set at 1024x768, advanced settings fonts set to 'large', and various appearance items selected for larger displays.

Also, under these settings, my email windows and fonts are way too small. Within Outlook Express I can select from the huge list of different fonts and font sizes, while I am able to change the font style, I cannot change the font size - it always defaults back to the former setting ignoring my new selection. It doesn't matter which mail client I am using either, Outlook Express, Calypso, Hotmail etc. The main window showing the message lists cannot be changed, nor the (create) new message window with the drop down lists of fonts and sizes.

Your further input would be appreciated.

In IE try going to VIEW > TEXT SIZE > LARGEST

see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like an intresting problem. 3 things come to mind. If you have another video card or monitor try one & see if there is any change. Before trying a new video card set the driver to Standard Display Adapter (VGA). you might try to inlarge your fonts w/ the Standard VGA driver & see what happens. Make sure you have the latest video card driver. If other cards & monitors do the same thing think about reinstalling Windows. First over itself and if that does not work a new install. Video card /Drivers, Monitor, or reinstall windows I think one of these will fix the problem. If not we'll keep trying!

You may want to check if you don't have any standard and needed fonts missing!
