i am a noice in cisco field , i just got a C2950 for my prep to ccna . the initial step are ok , now i want to pwoer off my device and dont how to go about it
Most switches in the real world are ment to run 24/7 365 ..... so they do not have on/off switches
In my lab I connect them to those "under monitor" power controlers that have an on/off switch for "Printer", "Monitor", "Aux 1", "Aux 2" Etc. - I then just log off the switch and flip the power switch for that switch. If not just log off and unplug the switch!
The power controlers are only about $10-$20 and make it very easy when doing some labs that need you to turn the switch off and then on - such as password recovery or at the end of the day when you want to turn them off!!!
narihyn,
Just make sure you wr mem what you been working on before you pull the plug. Like the previous post stated Cisco switches are meant to stay on 24/7. I have seen a switch in Iraq take on dusk storms and still work. Don’t think of Cisco devices as a PC. Windows systems need to be reboot every 5 seconds LOL no Cisco devices. The fans are the only moving parts unlike a PC. With that being said you have hardware running your Cisco devices rather than software.
I plan on buying an under-monitor like Ciscoguy but until then I have a couple of power strips (rack mount surge protector) and basically have the routers plugged into one and the switches into another...
That said I can turn my routers on one at a time... (They have their own on/off switches unlike.. switches) But when I turn the power strip with the switches plugged into it all four Catalyst 2924XL's power up!
Plan on buying another strip for the 2950's... I only have one so far!!!
