When Windows 98SE shuts down irregularly the subsequent reboot caused Scandisk to run automatically which I understand is the default. For some reason Scandisk does not run automatically any longer on my machine. Does anyone know how to restore it please?

edit the msdos.sys file and set AutoScan=1
This will allow scandisk to start on bad shutdown. James Collins
