I inherited an AD that contains entries for several servers that no longer exist. I want to clean these entries out of the AD. All the servers were DC's and one was an Exchange server. How do I remove these entries and get rid of all the residual information about them?

Install the tools from the server CD (support folder). Try ADSI Edit. I suggest a full backup before doing this. Make sure you have moved all the FSMO roles to existing controllers before deleting any now gone controllers.

I had exactly the same problem and managed to correct it by running NTDSUTIL which is a dos utility. Do a metadata clean-up and remove the servers. Once that has been done if the servers are still present in AD then use the ADSIEdit facility from the resource CD
