After I performed a upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 Pro I noticed two (2) new files on my desktop. One was kfile.kcs and the other was kactiv.kc8. I wasn't sure what type of files these were so I tried to open the .kcs file using wordpad. Well I spaced out the check box saying to use this program to always open this type of file and now I would like to put it back as "Unknown". Basically I would just like to know how to unassociate a file extension with a program. Can it be done?? Personally I'm not that concerned with what these files are since the machine is running fine. Just curious. Thansk in advance

Milkey, Sure. Open Windows Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types->Advanced->Edit... and remove the program associated with that file on the 2nd line. Click OK to save. Have fun! Hope this helped. -md

I probably should of included this is the original post, but the file extension .kcs does NOT exist in the file extensions list under file types or in the registry under H-KEY Classes Root

hi..
Just highlight the desktop item.
Hold the shift key and rightclick the mouse (if left click is normal selecting click).
In the resulting window, select OPEN WITH
..
You can do the same by highlighting a file in the explorer to open it with another association.
Best of luck ramani :-9
