i have recently restored my system from a saved checkpoint. therefore i also have lost a few windows updates, which had been loaded in between. however, trying to reload them doesn't work because windows treats them as 'successfully loaded'. some newer updates also fail now; i guess it's because the previous ones are required and missing now.

how can i reload the missing updates? do i have to delete some protocol files, or something else?

hoping for a good hint,

phaedros

I would do a two-step process:

Step #1: Identify Missing Hotfixes

1. Download HFNetChk.exe (free)

2. Run the program, as it needs to download an XML file containing information on all Hotfixes for your machine.

Start, Run, CMD
cd C:\Program Files\Shavlik Technologies\HFNetChk
hfnetchk

3. Now run it again and create a hotfix file:
hfnetchk -v -z -x mssecure.xml -f scan.txt

4. Examine/print the file
notepad scan.txt

HFNetChk examines several values before it reports on the status of a patch. The registry key that is associated with the patch is checked first. If this registry key does not exist on your computer, the patch is considered to not be installed. If the key does exist, HFNetChk examines the file version and file checksum for each file in the hotfix. If all of these values match, the patch is considered to be installed. If any one of these tests do not work, the patch is either considered to not be installed, or it is flagged as a warning (depending upon the results of the check).

Step #2: Repair Missing/Damaged Entries

1. With your printed list of incorrect or missing entries above, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove the missing or damaged entries. Do not worry if there is not an entry for all. Reboot.

2. Go to Windows Update. Update.

3. Now run the Belarc Advisor. You want to use IE to Open, not Save, the Belarc download:

In the "Installed Hotfixes" section of the Belarc report, click the "Details" hyperlink next to each Hotfix that did not have a Add/Remove entry in Control Panel. This is most cases will bring you directly to a MSFT download link. Write down the download name (it is easy to foreget them), and download the Hotfix. When done the Belarc listing, go back and manually re-apply the Hotfix. (Windows will always re-apply the Hotfix if done in this fashion).

4. For anything that falls through a crack above, use the Windows Update Catalog to search for the Hotfix by its KBxxxxx number. Here's how:
