How to reinstall the Server Service?

A friend has an XP PC and likes to play around, as we all do, and somehow he has managed to delete/remove the server service, so his shares no longer work, no surprise there.

How can I help him reinstall the server service without having to rebuild his PC? Is it possible to do this?

the registry entires in hklm\...\Services\Server have gone. I tried copying some across from another machine but no go due to SIDs and Guid being present in some of the registry keys.

I have attempted to search Microsoft and Google for an answer but have had no luck to date.

any help or references would be greatly appreciated.

When using XP, the system creates " restore points", which you can go back to to restore your PC in a given state.
So try the " Help and support" feature and look for " system restore".
Just follow the wizard and your friend should be saved ( I hope)

Umm, no bloody good mate, he had disabled the restore points items.

worked out how to reinstall the server service though. pretty simple after the fact....

For those who wish to know how:

Open "My Network Places"
Open "Network Setup Wizard"
Next
Next
Select "Other" -> Next
Select "This computer beongs to a network that does not have an Internet Connection" -> Next
Chuck in the Computer Name as the "Computer Description" and "Computer Name" -> Next
Choose a workgroup name -> Next
Next

Server service and workstation service and dependant services are now installed.

Then the next option is a file overlay. From the i386 dir run from cmd line "winnt32 /unattend". This will replace all sys and dll files without a full reinstall. A+ N+ Sec+ SME/Sec+
