Hope this is not too beneath all of your expertise but we are not getting any tech support from Samsung with regard to installing our network printer, and from other DNS questions I sense the answer is in this group somewhere. We have a Samsung network printer, ML7300N, that our XP Pro system thinks is on the network and working fine, but there is obviously no connection being made to the printer as nothing is printing and the printer shows no response. When I go to add a network port, the setup software says "select a printer from the list" and the box has no printers on the list to choose from. If you then click on "Add new print server to the list" it asks which of four ways you want to locate the printer, including IP, IPX, MAX, and server name. The name "Samsung Printer" suggested by Samsung elicits no recognition. Trying various IP addresses does not seem to work. The only clue is a message saying "be sure the printer server name has been registered to the DNS server," which it probably has not been as we don't know how to do that and apparently Samsung does not either. Any suggestions as to how to register the printer server name with the DNS server? Many thanks.

Ok,

Can you tell us how the IP address is allocated? is it static or DHCP?

if it is a static one (and you haven't changed it) it should be listed somewhere in your manual.

Check that the address is on your subnet, if not you will need to alter the settings of a PC to match it. You should be able to telnet to it (or maybe even browse to it). There may even be a configuration program shiiped with the server

Once you have done that, you should be able to set a name and IP easily (or enable DHCP)

If your address is allocated by DHCP. check the current leases on the DHCP server, for any name that doesn't fit you network. It may be something as daft as "SAMSUNG_PRINTER"
or so. Again once you have the IP, telnet or browse to alter name.

If you are using static IP, you will need to add a host to the DNS (add host in forward lookup zone & click checkbox to create matching ptr in reverse)

You may also need to alter your dynamic updates setting in DHCP. Select properties of server DNS tab check "Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic update" is checked (it isn't by default)

Hope that offers some help!

Take Care

Matt
