Hello:

On my Win98 (not Win98SE) computer, I have a "Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI" display adapter.

My display settings won't go any further than 800x600 with 256-colors.

I read I need to get the LATEST display drivers to get to 800x600 with 16-bit (high color) . . . so I searched for the latest "Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI" drivers.

I came up with a file "C46W141.EXE" - but I am unsure whether these drivers are an UPDATE or not.

The README.TXT file only speaks about how to install these drivers on WINDOWS 95 . . . and never mentions Win98.

Now, the following files are "presently" on my Win98 computer . . .

CIRRUSMM.DRV 4.10.1650 Copyright 1992-1998.
CIRRUS.VXD 4.10.1633 Copyright 1992-1998.
CIRRUSMM.DLL 4.10.1650 Copyright 1992-1998.

The file "C46W141.EXE" contains the following (among others) . . .

CIRMM.DRV 4.10.01.2106-03.00.09 Copyright 1994-1998.
CIR.VXD 4.10.01.2106-02.00.11 Copyright 1994-1998.

QUESTION:
Will file "C46W141.EXE" files UPDATE my present "Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI" display drivers . . . or (if not) does anyone know where to get the LATEST "Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI" Display Drivers (for WINDOWS 98) from?

THANK YOU for any info or help.

Thank you, KENTO:

I had that one downloaded already, however, it is v1.40 - while the file "C46W141.EXE" (mentioned in initial post) is v1.41.

This file "CIRRUS.EXE" has file versions . . .

CIRMM.DR_ 4.10.01.2101-03.00.03 Copyright 1994-1997.
CIR.VX_ 4.10.01.2101-02.00.04 Copyright 1994-1997.

What I need to know is . . . are any of these file versions NEWER than the version 4.10.1650 (or 4.10.1633)?

That EXTRA .01 in the other file versions is "throwing me off" . . . without it placed where it is . . . I would be able to see myself that .2106-03 is NEWER than .1650 !!

First time I've been "thrown off" by a file version comparison . . . want to make sure because I don't know if I could find the "presently installed" (4.10.1650) driver version again.

Best regards.

Those appear to be the latest drivers for that card. They should work in your system, but I recommend is that you don't force the driver to load, but rather update manually through device manager and see if Windows likes what your feeding it. If the drivers are newer, it will automatically pick them up. Otherwise, Windows will tell you it's not liking the drivers.... Enkrypted

But you may also be battling a memory size problem. Display settings are a function of the memory installed. You may never get more than 256 at the 800 by 640. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

In 98, windows will tell you only if driver you're trying to install is older than current - it won't stop you installing. Also there's a very good chance that the 'latest' version is the one that comes with win98 (I had this with another cirrus card - 5464) as I think cirrus abandoned making drivers for these age of cards before 98 came out - and its website (in 98) used to say - use the win98 drivers. I would just get hold of as many versions of drivers as I can and try them all - pick the one with best results. That's what I did for 5464 card - found the last but one issue from cirrus (for win95) worked best with 98 (the ones with win98 didn't display dos games properly).

Also remember that there could be a possibility that your card might not have enough RAM on it to enable more colours than 256 or a higher res than 800 * 600

Hello and THANK YOU to "Kento, Enkrypted, Edfair, Wolluf, PeteH2:"

ALL gave me very good and "makes sense" ADVICE.

I will try as many "downloads" as I can find . . . but, I realize that I should also discover how much MEMORY this "Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI" board has.

Also, this Win98 (not Win98SE) computer only has 64MB EDO Memory (if that has anything to do with the video settings ).

This "Tek-Tips" Website never lets me down and when other Tech Forums can't provide an answer/solution . . . I remember "Tek-Tips" and get right back here.

Best regards to all.
