A couple of months ago, I was in a guy's office and I noticed he had his desktop icons in groups, just like I do on my desktop, but with boxes around them, which was a nice visual touch. I keep tons of icons on my desktop, and would like to be break up the monotony a bit.

I didn't ask him how he did it, because I figured I could Google it and find the answer. But I can't find so much as a clue. I sent him an email asking how he did it, but after a week he still hasn't replied.

I would be grateful if someone would tell me how this is done.

Try this.

Create a folder. Put all the icons you want in that folder. Now drag this folder to the egde of the screen (sides are easiest). Now grab this new toolbar and drag to free space on the desktop.

I don't think that's it. I just tried it, and it created a "toolbar", which looks like a miniature window. That's not what I'm talking about though.

What I saw on that guy's desktop were just a line around a group of icons, just like if you wrote your name on a sheet of paper and then drew a box around it. That simple. The wallpaper was still completely visible and everything.

Do you know how to do that?

it is possible that he may have been using a Windows Desktop "tool", there are many tools around that let you mess around with XP desktop, may do things like this. There is even an official microsoft one, but I can't remember the name of it.

You could always ask the guy?

Hope this Helps.

Yeah I agree but I think you can turn the animated function on and off. Never used the product so cant tell you much more. sorry.

He may have created a folder on his desktop with the icons he wanted then dragged the folder into the top left of the screen to create a toolbar. Like something described in thread779-1223237.

You know what sucks? Those adwords in these posts. Hey Neil Cotton, they turned the name of your company into an advert. There's something not right about that...

Anyway, ya know, you guys don't read very carefully.

To Neil Cotton: As I stated in my initial post, I tried sending the guy an email asking how he did it, but I never got a reply.

To James Cottingham: We already went through a discussion of creating a toolbar on the desktop. They look stupid and aren't what I'm looking for.

Don't mean to be ungrateful. I do appreciate you guys trying. I suspected from the begining that the guy might be using a third party tool, but I figured somebody here might know.

I'm gonna try emailing the guy again, and if he doesn't answer I'm gonna go down to his office and kick his a**.

Just kidding, of course. right now I'm gonna post another question, this time about browser windows.

Thanks guys,

Greg
