How to protect an entire server folder with cookies????

I protect pages that member's only can see with a simple check for cookie. If it's not there, they get a login page. Now, I can't protect pdf files that way, but can I protect an entire folder so that I can set all pdf files in that folder and only browsers showing the cookie will be allowed to view them???????
