How to pass a gradient through text??? 1

Watch the "IMMIGRANT" word, how they pass a gradient in the background of this.

Is that done by carefully making a mask over top of the word shaped the same way as the word, and then passing a gradient that way???

You know, I never thought to even try setting text in a mask layer. I guess I figured it would just stay behind the whole text field rather than just the text, konw what i mean??
