Hi Folks!

Is there a way to open a screen saver (.SCR file) so I can include/exclude pictures?

I've searched around the forums and find a lot of threads about Screen Savers but most of them related to problems with screen saver in Win 9.x / NT / XP or how to build a new one. I don't want that I just want to change the one that I have (freeware, downloaded from
Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, I am not the expert at screen savers, but as I understand it, a screen saver is essentially an EXE file with a different extension. If you have ever tried to open an EXE file just to mess with it, then you probably know where I'm going with this..... It would be very difficult for most people to even attempt it. Unless you really, really want to get into it (and you are more computer savy than the majority of users [and most technicians], then I wouldn't really bother.

This is just my take on it, any body else out there with any info at all, please post! ----------------------------------------

This depends on many things. All screensavers are just *.exe files renamed to *.scr. You would need to find out what programming language the screen saver was written in and then try to find a decompiler for that language. However if the screen saver has any sort of copyright on it then decompiling is illegal.

good point on both accounts! ----------------------------------------

Hi Folks,

That's what I feared! *.scr being just a fancy name for a *.exe specific for that function. And no I don't want do go that deep (finding the language, decompiling, etc. I've never been much to the hacker side) and I definitely don't want to break any copyrighted program.

I really just want the pictures. If anybody around knows a way to extract the pictures without breaking my head [hammer] and the law [nosmiley]...

Thank you guys for your postings anyway!

Your question aroused my interest. Here's what I did. Started the screen saver and when it reached a picture that I wanted I pressed the PrintScreen key. Then I pasted that into MsPaint program and was able to save it from there. Try that and see if you can save those pictures.

BeenThereDoneThat:

Thanks for your help but I've been there but I wasn't able to do that...

Do you have a capture screen program running underneath?

When I press PrintScreen alone (with the Screen Saver appearing on the screen) nothing happens. When I press Alt-Print Screen nothing again. Any other key, as one should expect, the screen saver is interrupted and the control goes back to the last windows application running.

What am I missing?!?!?!

I don't have any special programs running. With the screensaver running I just press the PrintScreen buton once. Then move the mouse to stop the screensaver. The image should be in the clipboard. I open MsPaint and hit Edit>paste and I have the copy.

LuRSH,?
What section of the website is the screen saver on? Let me know and I will download and get the picutres for you.

LuRSH:
When you hit the PrtScn button, it won't give you any confirmation window or anything, it will just store the contents of the screen in the clipboard until you paste it into something, like paint, or Word, etc.

Try it again.

Capture it with SCREEN THIEF from Nildram Software.
