How to make a Outline Path?

I was busy with this Adobe After effects tutorials and i got stuck at this point:

Create Logo Outline Path.
Create a New Composition. (640x480)
Create a Black New Solid. (640x480)
Prepare Logo Outline Path using Illustrator.
Copy and Paste to Mask Path.

How do i make a mask path of a word so i can copy it into after effects?
