I have two folders that should be identical but are not. (It's my fault, I was sloppy.) I am trying to sync them up again. I cannot just delete one and replace it with the other because I don't know what is different about them.

They have the exact same subfolders, but one of the two folders has 11 more files than the other. I have tried opening up every subfolder and comparing the two, but it is too tedious. Is there an XP GUI feature or a DOS command to instantly list the entire contents of a folder and all its subfolders (all the way down to the lowest level)?

Thanks.

This lists all the options possible with DIR:

DIR /?

You could open 2 windows and use DIR /S /P in each window to visually compare the two side-by-side.

If you have WinDiff (free in the ResKit that came with Windows 98 Plus!, but not free in later versions) then you can save each directory listing to a file and then compare the differences between the two files with WinDiff.exe.

DIR /S > DIR1.TXT

A program called Replicator from Karen's Power Tools can be used for this.

Read her article (particularly the section on Synch Tips) for instructions on how to do it at this address:

She also has a program called Directory Printer that you might find useful for what you're doing.

Thanks everybody. Sorry for the delayed response. It's a busy time of year for me.

If you get this problem again, scoot along to and download Beyond Compare. It's a diff utility on steroids, and one of the options gives you exactly what you were looking for.

Sorry I didn't see this thread last week :(
