how to know if locate is still work

I have to use the locate command to find text in a memo field of a table with 50000 records and this search sometimes take a long time and I'd like to inform the user an evolution of the searching process (like a thermometer). How to do that?

While I've seen techniques to show this kind of info, it can GREATLY slow down the search, so it's really not a good thing to attempt.

What are you searching for? Is there any way to 'index' the data, or reduce the number of records you have to actually LOCATE on?

Fifty thousand records is really not that much - is the network very busy? Are the file server or workstations 'underpowered'? (i.e. What kind of configurations are you using?)
