I'm upgrading from a 733mhz to a 1.1gig Intel Celeron CPU, my current motherboard supports up to a 1.1 chip. Do I need to use heat sink compound (retailer told me I don't need to use heat sink compound...)? If so which brand is best? Also will I have to upgrade my BIOS when I put in the new chip or will it recognise the new cpu by itself?

Thanks

Retailer probably meant that you can use the little square of heat sink "tape" which often comes with a new CPU fan.

It is generally best to scrape away that piece of gunk and use a high-quality thermal compound (e.g. Arctic Silver). I've heard that the little square of generic stuff might actually be less efficient at heating than bare metal-to-CPU contact.

If you plan to overlock that CPU definitely use thermal compound plus a nice, big heatsink and fan assembly.

Also, make sure that you do not use anything metallic to scrape away any previous thermal paste or thermal pad. It will scratch the surface and damage the heatsink.
And if you experience higher temperatures with the new CPU and the old heat and fan, then consider installing a higher capacity fan. If that does not cool things down sufficiently, then install a more efficient heatsink.

If your MB is designed to support a 1.1 GHz CPU, then the BIOS should not have to be upgraded.
