How to fix "flat" buttons?

Possibly just a simple question, but I've been searching the Web and can't find anything...

A friend told me that she had somehow caused all of her buttons to go "flat." When I followed up, she replied as follows:

"Thanks for the offer to help. My operating system is Windows 2000, the buttons became flat just randomly one day when I started using my computer, I did not install anything new, and at first everything in view was 'flat'. I tried re-starting the computer, which didn't help, and so I eventually just did a system restore to a point about a week ago. That made most of the buttons 'become 3-D'. The only ones that are flat now are the minimize, half-size and close-out buttons in the top corner of any program. It's really not a big deal to have those buttons flat though, so I'll live. It hasn't impaired any of my programs, it just made them look a bit weird, and now that most of the buttons have reverted back to their normal condition, I'm happy. Thanks for your offer, though."

I wasn't aware that 2000 had a restore function? Did I just miss out on that bit, or is she confused and really running XP? In any case, does anyone know a) what she could have done to make the buttons go flat, and b) how to fix the window control buttons now?

Sounds like she's running XP and changed the View back to Classic style. Newposter
