Hi there,

I used to have a ghost image that allowed me to install 98 onto customers machines. This image was legal because although it installed all the system files and drivers required, after reboot it prompted the customer for a serial code before continuing on to start windows.

Unfortunately I've buggered up the cd and lost the image file. Anybody know how I can create a new one. Copying the installation cd is ok, but it's how I force the machine to demand the product key AFTER everything needed from the CD itself has been installed.

Any help would be appreciated, incidentally I'd also like to know how to do this on XP and 2000

I don't know how to make a cloned 98 image ask for serial code when its first loaded - but for 2k/XP have a look at sysprep and setupmgr (deploy.cab in \support\tools on the install CD - or find it on the net for latest versions)

Unattended install may be what you are after, but I've never done this with win98 (and is there any demand now - how many new windows 98 installations do you do? I could see a ghost image to restore if system falls apart. Also - it doesn't really matter about the key - its the licence - and I think older versions of will let you change the 98 key).

btw - you do know that clone image will only work on machine with very similar hardware as the original setup? (certainly the mobo need to be same or very similar). Otherwise you're into repairing the installation you've just loaded - which rather defeats the object!

Probably would make an installation complete, then delete the hklm key that has the cd key and the serial number along with the local key enum folder. Then burn it.
Missing the cd key and serial will force the question and with enum gone you will detect and install the hardware stuff.
