Hello,

I would like to create a FTP on a 2003 server. The destination directory for this FTP will be on antother server (file cluster) => I mean the folder where my users will put their datas.

My questions are:
How do I have to configure my destination directory (FTP directory)? Do I have to create a share folder?

I would like one specific sub-folder for each user, with read/right permissions on it, and read permissions on others users folders. So:
Do I have to create manually each user folder?
Do I have to set myself every NTFS permissions on them?

Sorry but I didn't find documentation about it on MS site (lot of documentations about creating the FTP using IIis but nothing about the share itself).

Thanks.

isterios,

What you seek could become complicated depending on how it is to be accessed.

If you are going to implement remote logins, then permissions can be employed as they will be applied to the user logging in. If you setup remote logins you actually do not need to use "FTP" as the users can transfer files as though they were physically connected(they are after fashion).

If you intend to use web based access via ftp it will be difficult to establish a connection to a specific Directory based upon the user and to setup read only for other Dir's. FTP is not a tool for reading, it is a tool for file transfer.

I would think knowing a bit more on precisely what it is that you are trying to accomplish i.e. where the users will be when they attempt to access; what type of access you intend to use, Web based or remote login; and other architecture parameters would assist in developing a better picture of what the complications/solutions might be.

There are other specific MS applications for W2K3 that facilitate remote computing, but you asked about "FTP".

Hope This Helps

Thank you.
I will try to be more precise:
my users are on a domain. They will access to the FTP¨under their domain session, using a FTP client (Filezilla). They won't access the FTP by web just beausoe our domain policies and/or infrastructure do not authorize it.

Actually, the FTP I set works but:
I have to create manually a folder for each user, named "userlogin"
I have yo set the NTFS permissions on this folder (write/and read for his owner).

For information I gave all users permissions to read from the parent directory.
Ex. parent directory = FTPFolder : NTFS: read for everyone.
Subdirectory = fr01234 : read (by default) and write only for the user fr01234.

So my question was: is there a possibility for the FTP to create and set automatically the personnal folder for each user, once they connect to the FTP? Because setting manually for 4000 users will be quite a nightmare...

Thanks.

isterios,

Now I am confused... What is your definition of "FTP"?

Mine is that it is an application that allows file transfer over the internet. Usually, between a client and a server, but not in an "Intranet" environment.

While I understand that you have named the directory "FTPFolder" are you actually using a "FTP" application to excecute file transfers?

What you have described (unless I am reading it incorrectly) is you have 4,000+ clients connected to/through one/several servers and have/want to establish personal file folders for each client located on a fileserver. The clients can map these folders so that they can store files there.

If I am correct, you want to create each client folder with r/w permissions and allow r permissions to all others.

You have accompliahed half of the task by setting r permissions to the directory (I assume you set this to all the contents). I do not know of an automated method to create the individual folders and as such you or someone will have to create these folders and permissions for the folder can be set at that time.

Hopefully, there might be someone that knows an automated method of creating the individual folders w/permissions.

If I have gotten this wrong please correct me.

Exact.

"While I understand that you have named the directory "FTPFolder" are you actually using a "FTP" application to excecute file transfers?" Exact, we use the application FileZilla for the FTP.

I thought the FTP on 2003 server was able to create automatically a own folder for each new user connecting. But I think now I was wrong.

(For more explanation, it is a little complex (sorry). We use a Citrix environment. We have "foreign" users who access our domain only by Citrix (for security reasons).
We would like these users to transfer files between their local PC to our domain network drives, by FTP, and not by Citrix. The reason is simple: Citrix is not opimized for files tranfer. So, for these users, we set our network infrastructure to let go Citrix and FTP flow.)

isterios,

OK. So the Citrix clients use FTP, what about the W2K3 and possibly other MS server clients?

Have you tried to read files via your FTP application?

I have not used any of the recent FTP apps as my old ones remain serviceable for me. The newer ones might have more facility to read.

This still does not address your desire to assign permissions to your FTP users as you want. I know of no work around to accomplish this. Sorry.
