Hi,

I need to copy some save sets to other volumes in same pool or
other backup pool. In NW, only clone or stage can do that but the target volumes must be in clone pool.

I knew it's hard but I think
it must be some methods to copy save set to same pool.

Any idea?

Thanks,

This maybe work on a clone pool but not on backup pools.
The manpage clearly state: "The pool may be any pool currently registered with nsrd(1m) that has its status set to clone".
You may stage into the same backup pool but not clone, of course.

Why do you intend to have that? Isn't it good enough that NW can also recover from a clone media?

The reason is for collocatation. I try to put all save sets of one clinets into one tape -- normal bakcup pool other than
clone pool.

In fact, another issue related with it: Volume's pool name
can not be changed. Relabeling will destory all data.(the data
there but can't be accessed)

If we can hack media database, index database and lable contents, I think it can be done.(consider how DR company do it?)

seems staging can do it. Any side effects?

1. You can collaborate your save sets via nsrstage, as i mentioned.

2. Yes, you can't change a pool's name once it has been created.
Workaround:
Create a new pool with the name of you choice.
- assign the same criteria to it ..... PLUS
- assign a 'dummy' criteria as well
- save the pool
- remove all media from the previous pool (no NOT relabel it!!!)
Of course it is better if you can wait until they retire themselves.
- delete this pool
- delete the 'dummy' criteria from the new pool
- For recoveries you must scan the media from the
first pool to rebuild the index information. After
that, you must create a pool with the same name.
But the criteria do not matter.

3. Hacking the media db would not help as the pool is saved along with the volume label.

4. Of course, you can change a volume's name only by relabeling (overwriting) it. This is usual tape behaviour.

Hi 605,

You are a real instructor.

Thanks for your help.

I have other questions for you in my next posting.
