Problem:
I'm currently attempting to us my Cisco 2511 access server to connect to two WS-C1900 switches.

Question:
Is there a way to program an asynchronous line to speak to the switches through an RJ45/DB9 converter? Or do I need to create a special RJ45/DB9 converter? (if either is possible, how is this task accomplished?)

Hardware:
Cisco 2511 access server (running Version 11.1)
2x WS-C1900 (currently unable to console into system)

I have attempted using a standard rollover cable to the WS-C1900 switch; however all I receive is the following: ATQ0H0.

Any information/assistance is greatly welcomed.

Sincerely,

There is no such converter. Serial and Ethernet are entirely different things. Just because you can make the connectors match up does not mean you can actually connect them successfully.

The simplest way to connect a 2511 to an Ethernet switch is to use the Ethernet interface. ;-) Buy an Ethernet transceiver, connect it to your AUI interface (which will have an RJ-45 jack), and then connect that to your switch.

John,

Thank you for your reply.

However it appears that I may not have been clear in my question/problem.

I'm using a Cisco 2511 Access Server. And I want to use one of the 16 available asynchronous cables to the console port on the back of the WS-C1900 Switch. The console port on the WS-C1900 switch is not an RJ45 connection, it is a DB9 connection.

I have an RJ45/DB9 attachment, but when I attempt to telnet from the 2511 to the ws-c1900 switch I receive the following message: ATQ0H0.

I have read that the console port on the ws-c1900 switch does not accept the usual rollover cable. And it will only accept a null cable.

Is there a way to change the pinout on the RJ45/DB9 connector and still use my 2511?

(ps, I know that you can not use Serial and Ethernet together, that is not my objective)

And I have thought about your suggestion to use the AUI port on the back of the WS-C1900 to receive a connection from my 2511. However I am attempting to use the 2511 as an access server, and I have two (2) WS-C1900 switches and only one (1) AUI port on the 2511.

Sincerely,

Ah, I understand now. Sorry for the confusion. I'm sure you can make this work but I'm not sure what the pinouts are going to be. You'd probably need a rolled RJ45 to DB9 connector. That would roll the connection twice so you'd end up with a straight connector.

Good luck!

We have the same thing in our lab, never did get the 1900's to work right off that AS . Same old crap from cisco they couldn't make all the console interfaces the same . You would have to look around and try to figure out what the pinouts are .I know configuring them from a serial port off a pc I use a straight thru with a null db9 connector I got at radioshack for like $6 . You could try your serial cable to a rj45 to db9 that has a db9 null hooked to the end that might work...
