How to connect 2 computers

What is a simple & easy way (cheap) to connect 2 computers, one XP ,one 98 so as to transfer data,USB and or serial???

The simple way is to get a router, the cheap way is a cross over cable, the XP computer can then serve as the host. The XP network wizard will help to set it up on both computers.

The first way requires 1 net card in each computer, the second may require 2 cards in the XP computer, good luck.
