Yes, you configure a NAS to handle different types of client connections. Depending on the NAS Server, you will get different features. I would first determine what goals you have for getting a NAS. Is it to run applications on, or just be a file server? What type of clients are connecting to the server like *nix, windows, mac, etc... Then compare different NAS solutions that meet your needs.
