LANA & NETBIOS Setup for Win 2000.
The following steps should be made to setup the LANA and NETBIOS Service:
1.) Enable Netbios over TCP/IP (see e.g.: Q258832)
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the workstation: 1. Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Network and
Dial-up Connection .
2. Right-click Local Area Connection , and then click Properties .
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , and then click Properties .
4. Click Advanced , and then click the WINS tab.
5. Click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP .
2.) Download and install the lanacfg tool (see e.g.: Q265861) (Remark: not completely up-to-date anymore ...)
1. Run the Lana_Configuration_Tool.exe program to install the Lanacfg.exe tool. To download this tool, perform
the following steps:
a. Go to the following Microsoft Web site:

Click the Product Update link, and then click Continue .
c. Click Windows 2000 in the Operating Systems section, and then click Continue .
d. In the Specific Search Item box, type Lana Configuration Tool , and then click Continue . Follow the
instructions to complete the download.
3.) Use the the lanacfg tool:
Description: The Lana Configuration Tool is a command-line tool used to view and change the lana mappings
on your computer. This functionality was removed from the user interface in Windows 2000, but can
be added back with this tool. You only need this tool if you have a specific reason for modifying the lana
mappings, or you have a legacy network application whose lana mappings must be modified to function correctly.
The available options in the Lanacfg.exe tool are:
H:\>lanacfg
Network Configuration Diagnostic
View, manipulate, or test network configuration.
lanacfg [options]
showlanapaths - Show bind paths and component descriptions for each exported lana
setlananumber - Change the LANA number of a bind path
rewritelanainfo - Verify and write out LANA information to the registry
showlanadiag - Show LANA diagnostic information
