I run Active Directory on a Windows 2000 Server. A user has just got married and wished to have her display name changed to her married name.

In the Active Directory, I Right Clicked on the User, selected 'Rename' and changed her name. I then got her to send me an email but her old name still appears.

Do I have to restart a certain Service or have I missed a step?

Thanks

you also have to change the name by going onto the user properties tab.

I've changed it under the General Tab - is there anywhere else in Properties?

Thanks

First you need to make sure you are logged onto a Domain Controller or Server that has the Exchange System Manager plugin so when you bring up Active Directory Users and Computers you will see the Exchange Tabs from the user properties.. If you want everything to change for the new user then you will want to change her user logon name, her SMTP address, etc. I would check the following:

(1) Exchange General Tab - Change the Alias
(2) Email Addresses tab - Add another SMTP address to include her married username@xxxxx.org. You can set this as your primary if you want. You may want to keep her old name there just in case people still send email to that SMTP address.
(3) Account Tab - Change her user logon name.
(4) Synchronize your Domain Controllers so your changes take place immediately. This is done via Active Directory Sites and Services.
(5) Check to make sure the display name changed. You can verify this by opening your Outlook email (if you have outlook) and checking the Global Address list.

This should be all you need to do.

I should note you already took care of the "Display Name" by making the change under the "General" tab.

Generally updates to the GAL in exchange don't happen immediately. You have to wait for the Recipient Update Service (RUS) to run and update the name. If you don't see a change to the GAL after about 4 hours you may need to troubleshoot a RUS issue.
