Hi,
We use MSn messenger within our offices but need to block it for our night shift CSR. I have uninstalled it but they use the web messenger to chat(3 xp machines only).
Any idea how to block msn web messenger on XP pro ??
I can't do it by blocking the port on firewall as we need it for rest of us.
Thanks,
NF

one way of doing it is putting the web address into the blocked sites in Internet Options.

^^ if you have disabled that option

Martin

Computing Help And Info:

how do I do it for all users hey way that they can't change it. I tried it and it seems like I have to do it for all of them and then they can change it.
I don't have AD( using NT servers as PDC)
Thanks for the help though.

I would just use the "Content Advisor" settings in these users' IE to block the site(s) and then password protect it such that they cannot unlock it.

Additionally, even though you don't have AD, so long as you're using XP Pro. You can still up gpedit on the machines to create a local policy to block specific applications.

The content advisor is a good idea but once the content advisor is on, it asks many questions for going to every website. For work reasons, we have to let our CSR surf many websites and it will be hard to have this on.
Thanks.

You could always re-route the DNS requests for that site to somewhere else.

Another idea - You can use the group policy editor (GPEDIT.MSC) to lock the security zone information. This means that users will not be able to remove the site from the restricted sites.

You can find it in the policy under Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Internet Explorer. "Security Zones: Do note allow users to add/delete sites."

If you think these users are saavy enough to know how to get into the policy editor, I would just rename the file to something obscure.

Thanks all .. It works great.
