Hi folks,

I have backup Exec v 8.50 and I want to backup to file and then copy the backup file to an external drive via a batch file. Sounds simple, but how do I get Backup Exec to place the backup file on a local drive? I have created a media set but there is no where to define it's location.... Some guidance would be appreciated.

Backup Exec 8.5 doesnt have the feature to create a backup to disk. Backup Exec 8.5 is no longer supportted by Symantec/Veritas and is EOL.

Only Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x will allow you to backup a file to a microsoft tape format .bkf file. If you had backup exec 9.x or 10.x you could create a Backup to disk folder inside backup exec and backup right to the external drive.

Backup Exec 8.6 has this feature as I am using it on a number of servers with SBS 2003 successfully.
I have only just noticed tonight that a client running even older, 8.5 does not seem to have the backup to disk folder as an option. So looks like anything later than 8.5
