How to backup InDesign programs

I am new to InDesign and have tried to find documentation on how to backup the Indesign system, without any luck. Any help would be very much appreciated.

If you mean document recovery in case of a crash, look at Preferences/file handling/document recovery. Change the location if you wish.

If you're talking about regular backup of files, use whatever you use for other things on your machine. Also remember that ID has "save a copy" on the File menu to keep a copy of your work.

Can you tell me how retrive backup files in Indesign? I just saved over a file by mistake. When I used Quark I would just search the backup folder for an older version of the file, but I can't seem to get this to work in Indesgin. Can anyone give me any ideas?

If you have just saved over a file, consider 'undo'.

With multiple undo, you can go back to a previous state if you keep that document open after accidentally hitting 'save'.

This would also be a good time to establish a regular backup routine where you mirror your documents daily on a separate drive.

I tried undo, but it wouldn't let me.

I understand that regular backup would be a good thing to do. How can I set this up to automatically backup files the way Quark does?

If you tried 'undo', then you must not have had the document still open after hitting save. 'Undo' does not work if you have closed the document. Undo only works for the session that the document is open.

If you never closed the document after hitting save and multiple undo does not work to go back to a previous state, then you may have greater system or application problems to investigate.

As you have found, InDesign does not behave like QuarkXPress in regard to backing up data over several versions. You may want to look at VersionCue if you have installed the entire Creative Suite.
