Hello I need to apply folder permissions to a user group on a W2K domain as follows:

1. The user will be able to write to the folder.
2. After the file is saved then it cannot be deleted by the same user.

In other words I want to write but then not delete or rename the file.

Is this possible to do on a Windows 2000 Adv Server?

Many Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Don't grant the right to Modify.

Unfortunately, without the delete permission (which Modify grants) you will not be able to create the file. The reason is that Windows creates a file with a generic name. Renaming a file is, in essence, deleting the old file and creating a new one with the desired file name.

I've been trying to implement something similar and the only thing that I have been able to come up with are the following:

1 - Give Creator Owner the Modify right. This will allow the user that creates the file the permission to delete it. You can then audit the parent folder for either successful deletes or both successful and failed. That way, if a file is missing, you can at least track it down to the user that deleted it.

2 - I'm still doing some testing on this, but I have had some success with dragging and dropping files, without having the Modify right on the target folder. You can try that and see how it works for you.

Good Luck!
