I have made an internal web site with assigned private LAN ip address-xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
So far we access this site by its ip address, but i want to assign some name, for example "example.loc" and to add it to DNS and users to access this site by its name not by its ip address.
I have Windows 2000 Server with installed DNS service.
Is there one who will guide me :))?

Simply add a host (A) record into your forward look DNS Domain name in your DNS.

Let's say you want your web page to be called intranet, then add a Host (A) record with the IP to the web server(xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and add the name intranet to the host name.

From there, if your network is properly configured, when your type "intranet" in your browser, the web server will respond.

This will only work from inside your network. To have this work from the Internet, you need an entry to your providers DNS and a setup to accomodate it.

Ok,but if i want to name the site "intranet.loc",how to do this

You can add a CNAME record with an alias name of intranet.loc pointing at the host name intranet.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Pav,
You can add a Fully qualified domain name as a host to your dns by placing a . at the end of the name. So follow red's instructions but in the name use intranet.loc. then use your internal ip for the address. If you dont use the . then the dns will append the domain name of the forward lookup zone to the end of it (giving you a host of intranet.loc.domain.com).

You'll need to add a new domain to your current one. Call it "loc". Then add the "intranet" (A) Record in the "Loc" domain.

More info:

If you have a dns setup with company.com, create a domain from there called loc. This will make a loc.company.com. Then add the intranet record in the "loc" domain and this will now create intranet.loc.company.com. Since company.com is already known by your network, only typing intranet.loc will be resolved properly from inside your network.

Norton,
One thing I forgot to mention is that if in your internal dns server you already have a host record for that IP, then you need an alias not a host record.

wbg34, thanks but it's not my dns server it's Pav40's.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

First I followed the instructions given by wbg34 and tryed to add a host as FQDN,but it is impossible to add "." in the name field. It looks like that i can write just the netbios name of the pc,not like intranet.loc
I tryed also to add alias but again it is impossible to write intranet.loc, just intranet,it is imposible to put "." to the name.
Maybe Red's way is correct and i will try it tomorrow

Hey Red,you are right,i could't wait until tomorrow and tryed your way and everything works fine :))
Thanks a lot to all of you
