You could have simply unplugged the harddrive and plugged it into a working machine as the second drive, except laptop connectors are different to desktop ones so you would need an adaptor or a laptop which can take two drives.
Unless you are encryting your harddrives you have to think about physically protecting a machine. Even then the encrytion can be broken. It is also very simple to crack a Windows password if one can get physical access to a machine.
