How secure is Microsoft's VPN?

I have a windows 2003 server and I setup routing and remote access so I can create a VPN connection. If I don't make any changes to the settings and leave the server and MS client VPN connection under XP at the default settings, how secure is it? Would the user name as pass be sent in clear text? If it is not secure could someone please tell me how?
