how muchof a beating can excel take? 1

hi

dont' have much excel experience.. but have been asked to make a small "application"..

question: is there a maximum number of cells that you can have in excel safely? in other words, say i want to have 50,000 cells with values (numbers, probably doubles or longs or something), plus whatever ineed for column heading/other text, will it be able to handle it or will it crash? is there an upper limit of some sort?
