How much Speed?? 1

I finally have the opportunity (and money) to purchase a computer that
is configured for MS Office Professional 2000. I am not a games player
or a graphics pro or a professional programmer or a musician, so I
don't want to "overbuy". Just a heavy user.

My question: Just howmuch speed can MS Office 2000 really utilize as
a stand-alone?? Especially, how much speed can Access
utilize? Processor vs Memory?

And finally, what would be the one thing that you would really want to
make a computer optimally configured for Office if you had the

Hi Deb!
I'm at home today working off my little 133 64mb ram which will be on its way to the bone yard tonight when "Betsy" as I call her, is replaced with an 866. At work I have "Cartman" who ("which" Gord..getting too attached) has an AMD 950 and more ram than I can count. Betsy is a champ and does everything very well but because of her limitation in ram size, saving big things takes forever. It appears for things like databases you can really use tons of ram. A big difference with todays computers goes right down to even hard drive speed and the ability to add even more to your...even more! My choice for an 866 was advised to me by a network specialist and it will arrive with 256mb ram. His opinion was that to step up to the "Formula 1" stuff as Cartman was a year ago is pointless. Just over priced for the difference in speed which at today's rate is too fast to see anyway. I hope this guides you a little and I hope you had a lovely day yesterday. Good luck Deb, Gord

Please advise what a "Cartman" is. And I had a great weekend, even though is was cold and rainy here in North Texas. I am planning to start out with 256 and trying to find a configuration to add more if available. And I am working with a Frankenstein Pentium 1 with 32 MG of ram! Speed is terribly slow. At work I have a HP Kayak with 256 and unlimited Hard drive (personal LAN space) - plus ZIP drive. I am looking to get 2 - 20GB hard drives. I always like a physically seperate drive for data as I keep all of my genealogy on the system and am notorious for not backing up enough. Probably like most people. : Deb Koplen

Geze Deb, I'd give you Betsy although she's still the one doing the work right now. The 866 is sitting beside her impailed by an incompatible modem. Maybe tomorrow...Cartman is a chubby, rude and irritable character from the television show South Park hence me naming my chubby, rude and irritable no name brand computer... Montreal +2 degrees C and sunny. A beautiful spring day! If you were to pick up any P2 you'd be happy versus your existing. P3/P4 versus yours? You'll probably pass out! Check out those incredible deals by the brand names (I don't know if I can mention Dell/Gateway or IBM here though.) I've toured the Dell site and you can sort of "build your own" leaving out the fluff you don't want and bumping up the goodies you do. Gives you a good idea on price / performance and I am not promoting Mr. Murphy, but a friend of mine says their service is exceptional. P.S. My 866...just a sec while I look....


Yup, no name brand...but I know the guy who built it. Now just to find a name for him/her...... Gord

First, I wanted everyone one to know how much I appreciate all of your information. It is great! I know that I will end up with just the right machine.

The sales types at both Dell and Gateway are saying that they do not have a platform for MS 2000 Professional that is any slower than 1000MHz. Am I wrong in thinking that, since I am getting a new machine, that I should go ahead and get 2000 Pro installed? Or should I stick with plain 2000 or even 98? : Deb Koplen

Morning Deb!
We have some computers running 2000P here at work and this is what I had installed in my new 866 at home, as I also bought another 866 for my wife...= home network! If I understand it correctly it is really NT.? It is fantastic and apparently much less likely to crash. Has real security if you want. Why either company doesn't offer this on lower speed (ya right) machines? I don't know. Maybe one of the other forums can explain that to us. In any case my connection speed is up by 50% and I'm using a "country" phone line, It's just a real treat overall. Gord
