I have just started to work at a new company. While checking out the File and Directory Security settings I found that they are a mess. Many Directories that have users with said permissions and also belonging to a group that has the exact same permissions. So now I have the joy of cleaning this up. I have been looking for a script or tool that would give me a report of all Directories/Files with user/group permissions....no luck yet.

If anyone knows of any tips, tricks, or tools to help in this situation I would appreciate.

OBTW: I am in a Win 2k AD environment

I am in the exact same boat. My suggestion, don't worry about it unless you do find a nice utility. I inhereted this w2k ad domain. Former admin worked on it while it was nt 4.0. It was upgaded to w2k, he didn't know anything about w2k. He's gone, and the person we reported to only knows novell 4.0. He wanted to delete a group because he didn't know what it was for. Take your time, work on a group only as you have time. Worry about the patches, bugs, viruses, service packs, (NOT sp3 though), etc. As admin, you're gonna have your hands full. Trust me, voice of experience. (Got the joy of the job because previous admin didn't keep track of patches and such, we were hit with nimda. Take care of the mundane, you'll save yourself a lot of headache.

I know people who read these get tired of me saying this BUT, Hyena is one of the best tools out there for general administration. It has a very good reporting tool which creates an Access database. You can get reports on most of the details of your network.

I checked it out Cool, but I don't like the pricing. Go to

and get langaurd network monitor. It's free, and give you right down to username, open ports, ip addresses and much more. For free, it's great. Glen A. Johnson
