Hello all, I had a server that upon boot up would give the error "Error 311 Services.exe terminated unexpectedly. The system will shut down on Authority SYSTEM\NTAUTHORITY. Please save all work and close all programs." The clock would start with one minute and count down until it rebooted. When it would reboot, it would do it all over again. This was a major problem being this was an enterprise server. I did all the usual stuff, last known good configuration, Directory Services Restore, Repair, none of them worked. I was ready to format and restore but then I tried this and it worked.

I booted into the recovery console and renamed services.exe to services.old. Then I rebooted. The server took 35 minutes to boot, but it booted nonetheless. It will boot with only the services needed for the shell to load. When it does boot, you will be VERY limited as to what you can do. But when it booted, I launched regedit and deleted all of the keys that belonged to the service I had just installed. Then I ripped a copy of services.exe off of a win2k pro box and replaced it on the server. I rebooted and the thing has worked great for a month now. All Complaints Will Be Routed To /dev/null

What service did you recently install? There was a virus a while back that replaces SERVICES.EXE...be careful out there.
