How does the UPC/MAC scan gun work?

I would imagine that it is just a plain old barcode scanner used to scan the MAC address barcode on the box that the phone came in.
I would suggest looking at the gun.
Determining the manufacturer.
Then go to thier website to download the manual for it.
I am certain all will be explained in the manual.
