In order to download a recent update from McAfee I am warned that I "may have to disengage pop-ups" in order to do so.

Obviously I need to as I can't download the update.

But I haven't a clue as to exactly WHAT a "pop-up" is and how to "disengage" it or anything else.

(No wander the English anguage is going to Hell! What with I "Nam" for VIETnam - "Cool" for exciting - which even and quite incongruously became "Cool it hot" has even become "UNCool" and more lately "SOOO uncool".)

When you open IE you may have excess toolbars added like Yahoo, Google or MySearch. They have a pop-up blocker button. I would remove these toolbars if you have them because they are a pain.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Many third-party programs to block unwanted ads from appearing during internet browsing have a feature in which you can either:

. specify the web site as allowed to show such ads. This is usually called a White List;

. or provide a keyboard shortcut to indicate that the new windows the web sites wants to overlay on your current browser window are to be allowed an not blocked. It is this latter feature that is being discussed in the message your received.

Win2k does not have a native popup blocker, so unless you have installed one you can ignore the message.

To experiment with using a popup blocker, the Google Toolbar, freeware, is a good choice:
