How does a DNS server know it is authoritative?

Does any one out there know how a DNS server knows that it is authoritative? If it is a primary DNS server for the zone then it is authoritative. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Because the zone is defined in the config file (/etc/named.conf for BIND on *nix) as a master or slave and the zone also lists the authoratative name servers.

Also the authoritative server would be the one with an SOA (Start of Authority record)
